Ramblings From the Editor! 9:30 in the morning and the air-conditioner has been running for an hour! Day after day of 104/105 degree temperatures. I'm walking around looking and feeling like a wilted weed. Enough already!! Let the North wind blow a cool breeze or two through this dusty little city! Oh, I'm sure Nellie is down there in Arizona laughing at me! This is probably Pea coat weather to him! If your shoes don't melt into the concrete, then it ain't even warm!!! It's so hot in Arizona that they don't have Mayors, they have Sheiks! I'm not used to it! I should be, after 5 or so years in this area. I also spent my youth here. We used to suffer through summers without air-conditioning. This was back in the dark ages before we even knew about such a marvel. I remember my Dad used to hook up our water cooler (no, not the kind you gather around in offices). This was a box with a fan and a place in back to put a garden hose. He'd put it in the window, hook up the hose and let it blast! Actually, all I think it accomplished was to raise the humidity levels. They found the USS Lagarto (SS-371)! Actually I
guess this is old news. They had a memorial service back in Sept. of
2005. She was reportedly sunk in the Gulf of Siam by the Japanese
minelayer HATSUTAKA. The Hatsutaka was sunk 12 days later by USS
Hawksbill.

You've got to respect and admire the WWII sub vets. The battles they went through are the stuff of legends! We had more casualties percentage wise than any other branch of the service! They had to do much more than to put up with a cranky old submarine, they had to put up with a bunch of cranky old Japanese that were doing there best to put them on the bottom for keeps! We owe you guys a great dept! So from me personally (and I'm sure I'm not alone in this) THANK YOU! Fridays is the day that I take my little 94 year old mom to get her hair done and to have some lunch together. While sitting in the Hometown Buffet, I was approached by a young man. He told me he was about to leave for Sub School in Groton and had seen my hat (sub vet). He just wanted to say hi! We talked for a couple of minutes and he left! Damn it! Sometimes I am caught off guard by things like this. I would have loved to stay in contact with him and relive the experience or offer advice all the way through school, to qualifications and beyond! This was a unique chance to see sub life through the eyes of a young Nuke sailor. Well, hopefully I'll see him again before he leaves! I'm still not hearing anything from anybody! If you have an anniversary, have new grandkids, taken a trip to somewhere in Europe, or anything!!! let me know! I'd love to print photos of the grandkids or travel photos in the newsletter. This is not just about me rambling on, this is YOUR newsletter. Send me some stuff!! Puleeeaaaze!!
