Ramblings From the Editor!

I'm late! I'm late! For a very important date!

Well, I'm not sure what happened! January went by in a blur of Sundays and other days, and somehow I didn't get the newsletter out.

I guess I could put it down to general laziness. I have been know to lean back in the lazyboy a little too often and contemplate the passing of time through a tall glass of ice tea! It used to be a glass of beer but I'll refer you back to the passing of time! My daddy used to say: "Enjoy your beer while you can, because someday you can't!" I know, not very poetic, but true nonetheless!

Anyway, here's the newsletter for better or worst!

Just got some photos today from Jim "Nellie" Nelson of the USS Drum, so I put those in! Thanks Nellie! In the picture of the forward room they have stationed a dummy dressed up like a Torpedoman!
How ironic!!

Our faithful Captain from the mid 60's sent me an wonderful note to pass on to officers and crew! Read it! It made my day! It'll make yours!!

Had to dig back into the archives for some sea stories again. Most of those on the web site were sent to me right after the '99 reunion, when the first of us got together in a small group in Reno. The excitement ran high and I got dozens of sea stories afterwards! Hmmm, not much since! ?? Sorry, but I've got to occasionally prod you guys into action. You're submariners after all!!!

We're getting closer to Reunion! I can feel the excitement in the air! It's like we gained some sort of a mental attachment by being on Spinax together. I feel like if I concentrated hard enough I could pick up some of the feelings of my shipmates! ..... Sam! Cut that out!!! I know, I know! But it's late and I'm sleepy!

The Marines have their battle cry: "Ooorah!"

The Army has its battle cry: "Hoooah"!

Ours came before all the rest: "Oooogah!"

Live long and prosper!

Rank/rate aboard: SN.  I was aboard Spinax as part of an extended Active Duty for Training and was striking for QM.  I finished my SS boat qualifications on Spinax and upon returning to Seattle, Wa. received my silver dolphins and later in 64 was advanced to QM3.  After graduating from the University of Washington and Commissioning in 68 in subsequent tours after a Viet Name Riverine assignment took me to Halfbeak, Officer Subschool, and then Pickerel in Charleston.  I believe you signed my “gold” qualification papers [as Division Commander] on the way in to New York Harbor for fleet week in 1971.  After Pickerel I was OinC of  ex Thornback during overhaul and reftra for the Turkish Navy, I then surfaced and went to Nav then Ops on a deep draft replenishment ship, instructor and course development at USNA and then to CGN-38 Virginia.  Active reserve followed at the Pentagon at the Navy Command Center and retired with three stripes.  All possible because I raised my hand at eighteen and “got brought up right in the boats!”  This is a great country and service.

Always best regards and respect.  Lewis

Changes of address, phone numbers and emails. If anyone has a change let me know  ralarsen@comcast.net

New:
I was EM/1c SS on the Commissioning crew in 1946 and got off in New London before she went on the cruise in the Caribbean and I can't remember the names of any of the crew.  Do you have the names of any of the crew from back then?  I'm also sending this to Gene Williams in hopes that he will know some of the old crew.
