Ramblings From the Editor! Well, here it is, a brand new year....2006. that makes it 40 short years since I left the Spinax. It doesn't seem possible; all the jobs, girlfriends, cars, motorcycles, happiness, pain, and suffering I've done since then feels like it all took place in a year. That's how fast the time has flown. What if it had been only a year. The march of time only an illusion. I would have entered the year (Let's see, what shall we call it..."The Year the Hair Fell Out?"), as a skinny young man just out of the Navy and on my own. In a weeks time I would have gone through 3 jobs, an ulcer, and 1 girlfriend. Another week, another job and girlfriend, and starting to feel a little crazy. Two more weeks, went through college, and another girlfriend.... Well, you're starting to get the idea.. I would have ended the year as a bald-headed ol' man unable to see my whizzer over my pot belly, and seeing all the pretty young girls my age suddenly look like grandmas. Yaaaargh! How did it happen? How did the time pass so swiftly? What happened to the plans and ideals of my youth? They say that there is a time in your life when you look in the mirror and see your Father looking back at you. Been there, done that! Now I look in the mirror and see my Granddad! Oh well, I guess age is relevant. I'm a heck of a lot older that I was, but I'm not as old as I'm gonna be. Besides, I can still hop on my Harley and head off into the sunset, wearing my Marlon Brando "Wild One" jacket ...all thick leather and zippers. As long as I can still do that, all is not lost. Did you ever notice that the older you get, the more the pretty young girls smile at you? Maybe you remind them of their grandfather. I never got these kind of smiles when I was their age.

I was just thinking of my best bud Doug. We've been pals for over 40 years...actual time spent together?...maybe a month and a half. Wheee! We need to welcome Captain and Mrs. Davis back from their Caribbean cruise. I know they had a wonderful time and no Captainy responsibilities (of course it's kind of hard to clear the bridge when the ship is 20 stories tall). The neat part for me was, the ship had a couple of webcams set up. When the Captain let me know where he was, I could tune in on the cam and see for myself. Ain't technology grand? Course I couldn't go ashore and have a toddy! I saw the movie "Ray" a couple of weeks ago. It was a well acted movie about the great Ray Charles. But it brought back some feelings for me. It seems like every time I went into a bar in the service, I was rewarded with Ray Charles on the jukebox. I still go ballistic when I hear "Born to lose!"
Old age is when
former shipmates are so gray and wrinkled and bald, they don't
recognize you. All I got for now, if someone would send some writings or sea stories in, you wouldn't have to put up with my ramblings. :-) Peace brothers Pecos |
