The After Battery was the main sleeping compartment for the ship's crew. It consisted of 36(?) bunks stacked up 3 high. In the aft section of the room was the main "Head" consisting of two toilets, two showers and two sinks. The showers, of course, went mainly unused during sea time. Below the snoring crew was the 2nd main storage battery. This was identical to the forward battery. Each battery consisted of 126 cells with each cell weighing about 2000 lbs. The cells were connected in series to provide 250 volts per battery. The two batteries were the primary source of propulsion power when submerged as well as the source for all lighting and auxiliaries. The battery was located under the walking deck of the compartment and was accessible through a hatch in the compartment's fore and aft passageway. |
