Life Afer Spinax: Joe Averi

I reported aboard SSR489 Dec 1947 and stayed awhile, leaving in July 1958.

I reported to Sea Devil SS400 For TAD until 10-58 at which time I reported to Treasure Island CA for a 3 year tour of instructor duty. At that time I was RD1(SS). In Sept 1959 I advanced to RDC(SS)at T.I. I was an on platform instructor for basic math, basic electricity and basic electronics. Later I was placed in charge of the E&C(Education and Cirriculam) department to revise and upgrade the basic Radarman Class A school.

After 3 years (1961) I was transferred to class B Radar School at T.I. for 40 weeks then to San Diego CA for 12 weeks operational advanced studies.

After school (11-62) I was transferred to Pearl Harbor and assigned to USS Barbero SSG317. I made two deterrent patrols on her and got transferred to USS Medregal SS480. While on her while visiting Portland Oregon for the Rose Festival I had a nice reunion with HMCS Grilse (which I Had recommisioned in New London in 1948) I made a lot of new life long friends from the Grilse.

In Sept 1965 I was advanced to RDCS(SS) and since there was no billet for an E-8 RD I was transferred to USS Sterlet SS392 at Whitby Island as C.O.B. I performed in that capacity until Dec 1966 when I received orders to Navy Astronautics Group Detachment "C" at Wahawai Hawaii (NAVOMSTA) as Assistant officer in charge. I completed my duty THere and was transferred to T.I.. for seperation to the fleet reserve on 02-14-1969.

Since I had lived in Fremont CA while on instructor duty and had kept my house I had a place to call home. I went to work in the insurance industry with Prudential Ins Co and did very well with a standing of #18 out of 25000 agents in the co.

I then went to work for Paul Revere life ins co and attended all their courses on disability insurance and did very well with the co.

I then opened a general insurance agency and Studied under an ins broker learning the casualty insurance field. One year Later I passed the state qualifying exam and opened my own brokerage. Its now been 28 years i have been in this field and its been financially rewarding and I had my own family as a workforce early on.

Didn't mean to write a book.
