Happy Birthday

A Poem by Dick Traser

Stand tall and free
for far beneath the sea
the guardians of our nation
serve with proud humility

Sentinels for one hundred
they have roamed the ocean floor
responding to every threatening
at our freedom's door

A few submarines now do the chore
once done by forces great
And now, like then are manned by men
from each and every state.

Men who wear upon their breast with pride
a badge to mark them from the
It says they serve in silence
and that they are this Nations best

Ask not of them just what they do;where they've been, or where they go
For these are things held in secret dark
and you have no need to know.

Know only that they are down there
and will be in future years
Patrolling seas both dark and
to belay this Nations fears.

These are your Sons America
and the boats in which they serve
They merit our gratitude and
and our allegiance must not swerve

And so in this, their centennial year
please join me when I say
Thank you for a job well done
and have a happy birthday.
