The Girl in the Green Dress

Joe DeMarco

We were in Hong Kong for either Christmas or New Years. Jay's wife had a cousin who had some management position at the Mandarin Hotel. I don't know how it was arranged, but the wardroom ended up having dinner at the Mandarin that night. We were seated, as a group, right alongside the dance floor, and, therefore, not too far from the band. Many of the dishes we were served were named after members of the Davis family. I think I remember Pheasant Miri Bi. I remember the Irish Coffee cart showing up at the table and Irish Coffees all around, compliments of an Indian shipping magnate. I remember a number of us noticing a good looking woman in a green dress dancing after dinner. I remember us, the entire table, standing and raising our glasses and toasting, quite loudly, "To the girl in the green dress!" Then, as I remember, the "wrong" woman, another one in a green dress, came to our table, flattered and smiling. She and her companion sat with us, I believe, until we left the place. My memory, then, is that she and her friend took us to a number of after hours places in Hong Kong until the very wee hours of the morning.
